Kehr Capsule of the Week: The Second Awakening of Christa Klages (1977)

Dream machinery for leftists (1977), as the eponymous heroine robs a bank, incompetently, to support her day-care center and then goes on the run, also incompetently. The German actress Margarethe von Trotta directed, in her first separation from her husband, Volker Schlöndorff, with whom she collaborated on A Free Woman. Everyone is very, very serious, and the film is very, very dull—inexplicably, for this could have been a rouser in the hands of someone like Godard, who would have understood that it was a comedy. Aren’t there any funny lefties left?
